South Oakland Citizens for the Homeless

Welcome Inn and its partners offer professional and volunteer services that address the emergent needs of unhoused (homeless) people in south Oakland County and help guide them toward independent living. Their services include meals, clothing and hygiene products, showers, haircuts, laundry, basic health screenings, and referrals for health care, housing, and other professional services.

BUC supports the Welcome Inn daytime warming center, hosted at Starr Presbyterian Church in Royal Oak, during winter months. Volunteers enjoy doing one-time jobs such as making casseroles, purchasing and delivering clothing, food, and supplies, working in the clothing closet, or providing a craft activity. Others spend three hours a week preparing or serving the hot lunches which guests enjoy.

The Welcome Inn is open Monday through Friday from mid-December to mid-March. In the summer, they operate on Tuesdays in Berkley, providing meals, showers, clothing, and case management.

Note: Services are being adapted to meet CDC guidelines for COVID-19, keeping guests, staff, and volunteers safe.

The Welcome Inn is funded through grants and donations and is operated by South Oakland Citizens for the Homeless. BUC member Sharon Kirchner serves on the Board. Learn more at sochwi.org/.
